BEAM EXPANDERS

Edmund Optics® designs and manufactures a wide variety of beam expanders covering many wavelengths and magnification ranges. The names of our beam expander families are inspired by stars and other celestial bodies that share a connection to the differentiating factors of each beam expander family.

Scorpii™ Nd:YAG Beam Expanders

The TECHSPEC® Scorpii™ Nd:YAG Beam Expanders offer high transmissions at a low cost. They feature AR coatings for the Nd:YAG laser wavelengths 355nm, 532nm, and 1064nm, and are a cost-effective solution for system integration.

Scorpii Stars

AR Scorpii is a dim binary pulsar star system consisting of a white dwarf and a red dwarf. Just as the low brightness of AR Scorpii correlates with a low optical power, the TECHSPEC® Scorpii YAG Beam Expanders are intended for use with lower power beams than the other beam expander families.

Arcturus™ HeNe Beam Expanders

The TECHSPEC® Arcturus™ HeNe Beam Expanders feature diffraction limited optical designs and a precise non-rotating focus mechanism, which maintains bore sight accuracy and minimizes aberrations of the focused beam.

Arcturus Stars

Arcturus is a red giant star that is the fourth brightest visible star in the night sky. The most common HeNe laser wavelength is also red (632.8nm), and the TECHSPEC® Arcturus™ HeNe Beam Expanders are designed for HeNe lasers.

Vega™ Beam Expanders

The TECHSPEC® Vega™ Beam Expanders are divergence adjustable to compensate for input beam divergence. These compact beam expanders achieve a λ/10 transmitted wavefront error and are available in both single wavelength laser line and broadband designs.

Laser Line Design  Broadband Design
Vega Stars

Vega is a variable star whose size slightly oscillates, changing the star’s angular extent just as TECHSPEC® Vega™ Beam Expanders change their angular extent to compensate for input beam divergence.

Draconis® Beam Expanders

The TECHSPEC® Draconis® Beam Expanders offer λ/10 transmitted wavefront error like the TECHSPEC® Vega™ Beam Expanders, but they utilize a sliding focus mechanism instead of a rotating focus mechanism for collimation adjustment, which minimizes beam wander.

Laser Line Design  Broadband Design
Draconis Stars

Alpha Draconis, also known as Thuban, used to be the North Star from 3942 BC to 1793 BC. Just as Alpha Draconis stayed nearly motionless in the night sky over the north pole, the TECHSPEC® Draconis® Beam Expanders minimize beam wander during collimation adjustment and keep the output beam motionless.

Canopus™ Reflective Beam Expanders

The TECHSPEC® Canopus™ Reflective Beam Expanders feature an all-reflective, monolithic design ideal for broadband or achromatic beam expansion and a wide variety of sources from the ultraviolet to the infrared including tunable, ultraviolet, and ultrafast lasers.

Canopus Stars

Canopus is the brightest star in the Carina constellation and appears white. Just as white light contains all visible wavelengths, the TECHSPEC® Canopus™ Reflective Beam Expanders are achromatic and can be used with a wide range of wavelengths.
