RUGGEDIZATION

      •   Designed to Maintain High Resolution Over a Wide Temperature Range
      •   Covers a Wide Range of Sensors Up to 1.1”
      •   Optothermal Stability from Passive Athermalization

All matter expands or contracts in response to temperature change. In a lens, this means that focus will drift with temperature. High-performance vision systems require athermalized imaging lenses which are ruggedized to compensate for this phenomenon. Athermalization can be active or passive and each type has its benefits. Additional information about the types of athermalization can be found in An Introduction to Passive Athermalization.

The TECHSPEC® Athermal Imaging Lenses are athermalized imaging lenses which are the result of a collaboration between Edmund Optics and Ruda-Cardinal, a leader in the field of optical engineering, specializing in the design and development of cutting-edge optical systems. Combined efforts enabled rapid and reliable development of this lens, designed to meet a wide array of applications with affordability, availability, and volume manufacturing in mind.

As the ambient operating temperature changes from -10°C to 50°C, the point of best focus for the non-athermalized lens design, shown in the top figure, also changes. The athermalized lens design shown below is protected from this change in temperature. This animation is not to scale.
