(5.6s) Filters are used to select certain wavelengths within optical systems. Filters can be broad, transmitting large wavelength ranges, or very specific and targeted only to a few wavelengths. Bandpass filters transmit a band of wavelengths, while blocking the wavelengths on either side of that band. The opposite of a bandpass filter is a notch filter, which blocks a specific band of wavelengths. Longpass filters transmit wavelengths longer than the specified cut-on wavelength and block the shorter wavelengths. Short pass filters are the opposite and transmit the shorter wavelengths. (8.9s)

Optical Filters Review

Optical Filters are used to selectively transmit or block certain wavelengths or wavelength ranges within optical systems. Broadband optical filters are used to select a wide range of wavelengths, while narrowband optical filters are used to select an individual wavelength or small wavelength range. Kristin Vogt, Product Marketing Manager, explains the benefits and types of optical filters in this easy-to-follow product review video. Read our Optical Filters application note to learn more.
